Description
Jamal the Tortoise by Angela A Stanton.
We were about to leave for dinner when the doorbell rang. A utility worked said "your tortoise is running in the front yard". We have no tortoise we said "you do now" he said and left. I have seen tortoises like this in the Galapagos Islands, only bigger. It kept on wanting to turn toward the road with car traffic so I decided to pick it up and place it in my backyard until his owner could be found. Lifting up was a mistake--he weighed in at 50 lbs but I had no idea.
I managed to take it to the yard without dropping him--not quite sure how but we both survived the trip. My kids came over that night while we were out dining and they fed the tortoise with our lunch salad (surprise! No lunch!) and gave him water and a garden one-week cart up side down served as a burrow. The next day the owner was located and came to get him but I managed to take a few pictures of him before he was picked up. What a gorgeous creature! I wish I could have kept him. :) He would have a safe place in my yard and what joy to look at an animal of this beauty!
